Top 6 Reasons Not To Miss This Trip!
Awe-inspiring wildlife re-connects you to the Universe
The word safari is a Swahili word that literally means ‘a journey.’ What makes a Healing Safari above and beyond a traditional African safari is that as you embark on an external journey through the wilds of Tanzania, you are being gently guided on an internal exploration of your own heart and soul.
Being immersed inside of the massive wildebeest and zebra migration, where you literally feel the earth vibrate, can gently nudge you out of any feelings of ‘stuckness’ and your soul soars freely.
Nurture a Yoga & Meditation Practice
Have you been telling yourself for a while that you want to be more consistent with meditating and practicing yoga? Are you seeking a way to include meditation and yoga in your life that fits your schedule and ability?
Great news! The daily meditation and yoga we practice in absolutely gorgeous settings on this retreat is for all levels of experience. Dr. Tanya will show you how to develop a regular home yoga & meditation practice guided by the heart. You will be introduced to Maasai Yoga & Meditation that takes its cues from the land and wildlife inhabited by the Maasai so you learn how to “talk to your own nature”. By the end of the Healing Safari, you will have established a regular meditation and yoga practice at a pace and level that is customized specifically for you.
Eco-luxury accommodations give you experiences of profoundly different environments
You begin the Healing Safari at a lodge in between Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru where you can feel the comforting energy of this land, home to the indigenous Maasai people. You then travel to the Serengeti, on the plains of the wide-open savannah, a visitor on the lands of Africa’s abundant wildlife. As you move through each climate, you can enjoy how your body-mind adjusts to each setting and you tap into new sources of energy you may not know you had!
Spending your days ‘in the bush’, in luxury accommodation, resting in the womb of Mother Nature; waking to the sounds of an abundance of birds, elephants walking behind your tent, and the roar of lions in the distance, you find yourself getting in synch with the enlivening rhythms of nature.
Learn secrets of healing wisdom from the beautiful Maasai people
Many East African safaris include short visits to cultural homesteads to meet members of the indigenous Maasai tribe. On the Healing Safari, you have the unique opportunity to be guided by a Maasai traditional healer himself and an author of a book on Maasai ancient wisdom traditions! You have the chance to dive deeply into some secrets of Maasai wisdom for health and happiness that you can integrate into your life back home.
Do you feel like you have been unsuccessful in some of your relationships? Are you hard on yourself? Are you anxious about the well-being of your children in this day and age? By getting out of your own personal stories and having the opportunity to be with the beautiful Maasai people, you will learn powerful and healthier ways to see these hurtful stories so you can transform them with love. You will learn generations old techniques the Maasai use to “neutralize’ bad ‘karma’ within the family line that will enable you to better understand why your own relationships may not have worked out so well and how to do things differently in your future.
Abundant time to relax and rejuvenate in the most nurturing of natural environments
A wonderful aspect of being on an African safari is that you have ample time to be with ‘me, myself, and I”. In the yoga and meditation sessions and on the game drives, are all moments when it is just you, in nature, and you can experience truly priceless ‘me time’.
We will guide you how to use nature’s healing power and how you can tap into it every day when you return home. And, there is ample time to relax, reflect and ‘air out your brain’ and see what ideas start to emerge from your heart and soul about how to make some changes in your life that bring you more joy and wellbeing.
Experience the power of African ancient wisdom traditions
Have you been trying out all kinds of techniques over the years to try to be healthier, lose weight, quit bad habits, or solve family problems? Thought you knew everything about natural health but….feel like you may still be missing something that could truly help you and your family?
While there certainly are benefits to many of the ‘alternative’ healing modalities available these days, traditional African healing is considered one of the most powerful and transformative. Maasai healing wisdom and techniques essentially ‘re-boots’ your operating system. You will be introduced to the concepts of initiation and rites of passage and how these can be modified for ‘Western’ culture to help you move through your life with more joy and fulfillment. And you will learn how to create daily rituals that give rhythm to your day which we practice on the Healing Safari. You learn about African practices for illness prevention, conflict resolution, and fulfilling your purpose in life that you can use for years to come.
Embarking on a Healing Safari is an optimal way to be introduced to the power of African ancient wisdom traditions.
Itinerary
Day 1-3: Maasailand
Welcome to Tanzania! Karibu Tanzania!
You are warmly greeted at Kilimanjaro International Airport and driven into the bush towards Maasai Lodge – Africa Amini, nestled in-between Mt Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft.) and Mt. Meru (14,997 ft). This is where you immerse yourself for the first three days in Tanzania, a special place where you immediately come to rest and reflect. In the middle of the wilderness of the Maasai steppe, you will stay in the comforts of a traditional bungalow, complete with all the modern-day essentials. We spend our days practicing yoga and meditation in the most peaceful and stunning of settings; nature walks with Maasai guides and learning about the traditions and stories from the people of this land. We will explore the concepts of “Knowing Yourself” and “Intentions & Desires” all guided by ancient wisdom traditions combined with the latest science coming from Positive Psychology.
This is the best place to get to know the rituals and practices of the Maasai people, traditions that have kept them strong, beautiful and proud for centuries. There is a pool over-looking the savannah and a sauna and massage room. Meals are made with love, combining indigenous foods with modern recipes. Most dietary sensitivities can be catered for on the Healing Safari.
From your bed, you may see the sunrise over Mt. Kilimanjaro in the morning, and late afternoon walks upon the earth allow you to feel the pulse of this land. The primordial African bush is one of the most profound ways to re-connect with nature in its purest form. A place where your mind, body and spirit find grounding, and you can truly relax.
Day 4-7: The Serengeti Ecosystem
You are transferred to Arusha airport for your flight into the Serengeti. Here you stay at a stunning luxury tented-camp offering an authentic and intimate bush experience in the middle of the Serengeti wilderness. Complete with a full-sized bed with cotton sheets and duvet, a warm-water rain shower, and sumptuous meals, this is the “true Africa” experience, the one you have been dreaming about.
In the Serengeti, you have a chance to see elephants, lions, cheetahs and leopards and truly immerse yourself into primordial natural rhythms.
This Great Migration is rated as one of the world’s most spectacular natural events – every year over a million wildebeest and zebra and antelope migrate across rivers and plains. Being immersed inside of this mass movement stirs your heart and liberates your soul.
During your stay, you experience meditation sessions overlooking the savannah, the healing power of storytelling around the campfire, African-style. Dr. Tanya teaches about understanding your mind-body constitution and the dynamics of your relationships within your extended family and your ‘tribe’, while Ole Sululu illuminates the parallels between what you see on the game drives and our human society, the sacred masculine and the sacred feminine from an indigenous African perspective.
Our final meal together as a group is a celebratory affair and we set the stage for the next chapter of our lives.

Your Guides
Dr. Tanya Pergola was called to Africa in 1999. She first went to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, and, after summiting the mountain, she experienced a profound shift in her perspective on life. Having just completed a PhD in Sociology and Social Psychology, she let her mind explore new territory while on wildlife safaris in Tanzania. She was deeply inspired observing the similarities between the way us humans behave and how the lions, elephants and giraffes behave. For the first time in her life, Dr. Tanya felt completely linked in to nature, to the universe. Through her studies in Environmental Sustainability and Development, she knew this primordial landscape, and the indigenous people who lived upon the land, were in danger of disappearing. Fast. She took it upon herself to do something about it.
Dr. Tanya has made it her life’s work to conserve elements of native cultures in Africa that are essential to keeping traditional cultures alive, and can also be useful for modern folks who feel overwhelmed, stressed-out, and generally unwell. She lived in Tanzania for over 7 years and together with her teacher and Co-Director Ole Sululu, founded Terrawatu, a humanitarian organization in Arusha, Tanzania that has been operating since 2001.
Dr. Tanya apprenticed with Maasai traditional healers for over a decade, and in 2016 her book Time is Cows: Timeless Wisdom of the Maasai won a Nautilus Book Award sharing some of the secrets for health and happiness that were imparted to her in Tanzania. Dr. Tanya is passionate about sharing this wisdom she was blessed to receive. She created The Healing Safari in Tanzania to bring to life the teachings she learned during her apprenticeship with African healers, combined with her years of study and teaching traditional Vedic practices – Yoga, Meditation and Ayurvedic Lifestyles – with Dr. Deepak Chopra, Nischala Joy Devi, and other wise elders who she has met over the past 27 years. www.tanyapergola.com
“On a bright Sunday more than a decade ago, I found myself in a primordial forest at the bottom of Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, accompanied by elephants, eagles, and Maasai warriors who have been at home in that remarkable region for many millennia. As I looked at the high canopy of trees surrounding me, their leaves began to shimmer, to sparkle, and an overwhelming sensation came over me. Everything was profoundly alive. And I sensed that I had come to a place on planet earth that could teach me wondrous things…”
– from Time is Cows: Timeless Wisdom of the Maasai by Tanya Pergola, Ph.D.
Lekoko Ole Sululu was born in a traditional Maasai village in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania. He spent his childhood herding his father’s cattle, being initiated as a warrior, and learning the medicinal plants and sacred rituals of the Maasai. For over 30 years, he worked as a guide on Mt. Kilimanjaro and leading wildlife and educational safaris with prestigious travel companies in Tanzania. In 2001, he co-founded the humanitarian organization – Terrawatu – with Dr. Tanya Pergola to help give back and support his community in East Africa. Like Dr. Tanya, Sululu is passionate about finding the bridges between the indigenous and modern ways and enjoys navigating between worlds and worldviews.
A respected Maasai elder, Sululu is a traditional healer and herbalist and travels extensively from his home in Arusha, Tanzania throughout Maasailand advising people on how to maintain their traditional culture while developing in new and sustainable ways.
